Good Evening 2nd Grade Families!
The fall season is officially upon us! It's a fun time full of many events here in 2nd grade... be sure to be checking the blog for important information and updates as we start some exciting new things in the coming weeks! It's also a very unpredictable time for the weather... your child is welcome to bring a jacket or sweatshirt to leave in their cubby.
Here are a few notes for this week:
Wednesday (9/17) is Early Release!
This is our first Early Release day of the year. Dismissal is at 1:40 PM. If your child will have a different dismissal plan for that day, PLEASE send a note with them or email me. Every family filled out an Early Release form at the beginning of the year, but we all know plans change. Even if that form if correct, please please please help me out and send a note or email. If they still go home the same way as every other day, there is no need to send a note. I will send another reminder Tuesday night. :)
What are we going to learn this week?
Spelling lists came home last week for most students in our class. Please be sure to help your child practice their words. Each group has their test on a different day. In 2nd grade, we focus on spelling patterns and understanding how words work, based on each child's needs. (see the blog for more information) One website we use often is called Spelling Cityhttp://www.spellingcity.com/ msfrederich/ The kids can find their list and study their words using the websites games and study tools. There are also two FREE apps for iPads and Android devices that you can download for your home devices. We use these in school and the kids are familiar with how they work. Have them teach you!
Find them here:
In Math we are starting to work on Number Patterns in Chapter Two. There were two handouts sent home last week: the first explains the chapter and what your child will be learning in the chapter. The other page is a set of vocabulary words. So much of math is learning new words - these are only meant as a tool to be helpful, not an assignment. Please use them to help your child learn the words at home, but they do not need to be sent back to school or turned in.
In writing, we are working hard on personal narrative writing. Writers are learning how to write an effective lead and closing for their stories. This unit is one of my favorites because I get to learn so much about your children! They shared so many stories about lost teeth, broken bones, first soccer games, and family vacations... it's been really cool! Plus, their writing has GROWN! It just a couple of weeks, I have really seen them try many new things in their writing.
Guided reading groups are in full swing! Miss Bozdeck is our Literacy Teaching Assistant who comes to our classroom each day for guided reading. We work together to teach the kids in their small groups. We are so lucky to have her in our classroom!
Important Dates:
Wednesday 9/17 Early Release (Dismissal 1:40 PM)
Wednesday 9/24 Picture Day & Library Day
Friday 9/26 No School (Professional Development Day)
Have a fantastic week!
If you have any questions or concerns, please don't hesitate to contact me! I love hearing from you!!
