I hope you had time to enjoy your 3-day weekend! If you haven't already heard, our Leader In Me Habit of the Month is Habit #5: Seek First to Understand, Then to Be Understood. This is a very hard habit - we are learning what it means to "listen before we talk." This week will talk more about empathy and what it means to see things from some one else's point of view. We have another busy week ahead of us - here are a few things to be on the look out for!
We had a fantastic field trip to Powell Hall last week! Friday was also a fun day with our friends and 5th Grade buddies! We got to do some special stuff throughout the day and spent some time sharing Valentine treats with out classmates. Check out the blog for some photos of both activities!
Reading
We wrapped up our work with "close reading." Students are very comfortable re-reading a text to ask questions, find information, and discuss the lesson in a story. This week we will concentrate more on asking and answering question. This is something we discovered earlier in the year and had a lot of practice with for the last two weeks with close reading. This unit will focus on three different types of questions: within the text, beyond the text, and about the text. First, we will be working with question that uncover meaning "Within the text." These are more basic comprehension level question, like summarizing and looking back into the text to find details.
Math
We have been working very hard to master subtraction with regrouping! Be sure you are practicing both addition and subtraction math facts everyday in some way! Most of the kids loved playing addition and subtraction war with a deck of cards. Here's another game to try to spice it up a bit! Eleven
Social Studies
We are continuing our study of our culture, traditions, and our heritage. This week students will bring home the materials to create their own timeline of their life. Last week we looked at several different timelines including a timeline of an Olympic athlete and my own timeline. The specific instructions for this project will come home with your child. Everything they will need will be sent home, except the string needed to connect each card. This project is due on March 3rd, giving the kids plenty of time to finish this over weekend time.
We have also spent a lot of time talking about the Olympics - the kids are pretty interested in the history and the different events!
Writing
We are continuing to work on writing persuasive letters about what we are reading. Students have learned to make their letters stronger and longer in order to convince the reader! This week we will learn to go back into the text and use specific examples and evidence with quotation marks. We have also been writing letters to our pen pals with Mrs. Mais's 2nd Grade class at Sappington!
