Weekly Update! Welcome to 2014!

Welcome Back! Can you believe we are half way through 2nd grade?!

First bit of news - TOMORROW is an Early Release day. Student will be dismissed at 1:40pm. If your child will have a different dismissal procedure, PLEASE send a note! Email is perfectly acceptable - notice of dismissal changes is a must on these days!

A note on the attendance hotline.... if your child is going to be absent, I appreciate emails and phone calls notifying me of their absence. That way I can prepare make-work throughout the day and make sure I don't miss anything for them. However, please be sure to also call the attendance hotline as well. The office needs a confirmation from you. That number is 314-729-2409

Hopefully we won't have any more snow days this year, but because we had so many last week, we will need to make a few up at the end of the year. Please see the following article on the district website for more information on the changes in the calendar.

There are a lot of events coming up this week and in the coming weeks. Please see below for more information about those events.

PRISM Projects
2nd graders are encouraged, but not required, to enter the PRISM science fair project. We talked about it in science today and I showed them some examples of different projects they can do. If your child would like to participate, you can find an additional form on the Concord virtual backpack. PRISM boards can also be purchased through the school office.

Muffins with Mom!
This Friday we will have our Muffins with Moms celebration. It is so important for our children to see the adults they love as readers. This celebration offers you a the perfect opportunity to spend some quality time reading with your child in their classroom. It's a very special morning, and the kids love it! Please arrive at 7:45 am and plan to stay until 8:15 am. Muffins and juice will be provided. Unfortunately, there will be no coffee this year (so if your like me and love (need) your coffee, bring your Starbucks!!)

Trivia Night
Concord's Trivia Night is Friday 1/31, 6:30 at Truman MS Cafeteria. I will be there calling out questions and hope to see you there! It's a great time for everyone and a wonderful fundraiser for our school.

Finally, there is NO SCHOOL on Monday 1/20 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day. We will be reading about Dr. King in reading groups this week, so be sure to ask your kids what segregation means and what the civil rights movement meant for our country.

Report cards should have come to you through email over Winter Break. If you have any questions regarding grades, please get in touch and we can discuss any concerns.

With a new quarter comes plenty of exciting new learning and activities! Our classroom got a bit of a makeover during Winter Break - a new layout and some extra space in our library to make room for a ton of new books that were donated to me by a retired teacher! I'm so excited to be able to share new books with our class! Reading and Writing will take us to new places during third quarter. We are going to spend a significant amount of time responding to what we read through our writing. We will also spend some time working on writing friendly letters.

We are kicking Math Workshop into high gear! We worked hard on developing a foundation of skills using money and counting change before winter break. The first couple of weeks back, we will begin to work with making change from $1.00 by counting on and by traditional subtraction. We will also dive into subtracting larger numbers, including borrowing. This is a very challenging concept, so there will be plenty of time to practice. The more confident students are with math facts, the easier this concept will be for them. Make sure to practice those addition and subtraction facts every day! I have also developed some new components to math workshop to give them plenty of opportunities to practice and enrichment in each of the math strands on a daily basis, including geometrical shapes, measurement, and addition.

I hope I didn't overload you with information! As always, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
