Thanks for another great week working with your kids! They are truly spectacular! Here are a few things that we did this week.
In Math, we started working with subtraction strategies. These strategies will help us problem solve with subtraction once we start working with larger numbers. The strategies reviewed include counting backwards from the greater number, using fact families. We also started using algebraic thinking to find a missing addend. We will test over subtraction strategies early next week.
Next up - Two digit addition!
It is very important that students are continuing to practice their math facts in addition and subtraction. I have created class accounts for two new math practice websites:
Sum Dog
Sum Dog gives kids the opportunity to practice math facts and play games.
Ten Marks
Ten Marks is aligned directly with the Common Core State Standards. The assignments on Ten Marks are what they can expect to see on standardized tests.
In reading we are continuing to study connections between text we read, our own lives, other texts, and the world around us. Guided Reading groups are making lots of progress! Word study continues to go successfully each week. Don't forget to practice your words at home!!
In writing, we are working on personal narratives. We focused on one piece this week, and creating an interesting beginning using setting. We also wrote closings that circle back around to the beginning of the story.
We also took time this week to start working on a life-long writing skill: email. If you would like to read more information about the districts email system (we use Gmail) please visit the parents page of the blog.
Today we learned how to log into our email, how to compose a new email, and how to reply to an email.
The kids are very excited about emailing each other! If your child has their own device, they are welcome to download the Gmail app and access their email from home. You can also access their email from any home computer at www.gmail.com using their log in.
If you would like to learn how to access their email, you can go over to the parents page of the blog for more information.
